About Lieven Herreman

Born in Oudenaarde in 1956, based in Ghent (Belgium).

Lieven Herreman graduated from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts (KASK) in Ghent in 1983. He immediately started working independently as a photographer in both the artistic and commercial circuit. From 1987 to 2018, he combines these assignments with teaching at the Academy of Visual Arts in Ghent. In 1990, he builds a spacious, well equipped photo studio for photographing objects and works of art.

Based on these diverse experiences, he develops his own artistic trajectory in which he questions the meaning and effect of the photographic image obsessively. His stubborn perspective brings us to reflect upon the issues of life itself.

About Louisa

Here, for the first time, a single woman with an actual name appears in the field of view. In these photographs however, the photographer is trying to capture the multitude of persona anybody can take on. Lieven Herreman is exploring the fascinating world of the mind by doubling images and generating disturbances that are reminiscent of hallucinations. Our eyes fall between different worlds, grabbing an image that immediately escapes it.

If you close the door

In ‘If you close the door’, the photographer collects the photos he stealthy takes during the meetings with his various models. In turn, the model in these images directs our gaze to the world surrounding her and which she undeniably owns. The visual language Lieven Herreman uses, bathes the models in his typical joie-de-vivre.

The case

In this ’case’, 25 photos take the form of an object. Thus curtailing the ability to communicate, Lieven Herreman is granting them an aspect of temptation which shows us how persistently we want to connect and ultimately fail to do so.

Alsof er iets te kiezen valt

In this series Lieven Herreman finds himself moving back and forth between another set of extremes: dim and bright, manufacturing and demolishing, emptiness and abundance. Gradually, the photos take on the status of ‘object’, in which the image tries to hide itself from view, asking the photographer to let go of the lead.

Out of the blue

In 'Out of the blue’ Lieven Herreman collects a number of images that arose from Déesses Fragiles, but which, because of the conceptual approach, did not find a place in that series. In ‘out of the blue’, the purposefully seeking photographer embraces moments of serendipity.

Déesses fragiles

At first sight ‘Déesses Fragiles’ is a collection of 120 black and white pictures of naked woman. However, when going attentively through these pictures, one will observe 120 ‘instants of surrender’, which provide the series its aesthetic coherence. This aesthetic was created by invading the personal space of the model, distracting her mind from her self-image with a set of difficult directions and capturing the uncertainty and fragility that comes with it.

At first glance ‘Déesses Fragiles’ (‘Fragile Godesses’) portrays 120 lean naked women in black and white pictures. To photographer Lieven Herreman, however, it is, if nothing else, a self-portrait: a physical rendition of his search for a fragile and ambiguous self-image.

Herreman did not ‘find’ these images, nor did he stage them. He rather provoked them in to being. This is a clear indication that to him, the process of searching in itself was more important than the finding. With his pictures he takes the onlooker with him on his search – or quest – to find the ultimate moment where elements coincide and collide. In other words, ‘Déesses Fragiles’ is a path leading to a confrontation, more than it is a collection of images. The confrontation in question takes place between the photographer, ready to launch his camera ‘attack’ on the woman in front of him, and the woman’s discomfort within her defencelessness against the assault and within her nudity.

The basic idea of the photographer’s method is abstracting styling and self-image from his subjects. He almost forces them into surrendering unconditionally to his camera and into becoming his vehicle for the ultimate image. On the one hand, the woman wants to resist the attack – she is a goddess, she strong and imposing – , but on the other hand she also wants to surrender – she’s also fragile and vulnerable.

This duality of resisting and surrendering, of being goddess as well as being fragile, is the essence of Herreman’s work. It is the immaterialized stuff he is obsessively trying to grasp and to put into one picture. In order to accomplish that, he uses expressive elements while at the same time ignoring aesthetics. By doing so, he was able to create his own aesthetic for ‘Déesses Fragiles’. Achieving that was the absolute condition for a successful photo shoot, because it is only by creating his own aesthetic, that ‘the picture forgets to be a picture,’ as Herreman puts it.

Herreman creates this aesthetic by standing extremely close to the women, invading their (naked) personal space during an entire hour, distracting their minds from their bodies by giving a set of difficult directions and by rapidly making one shot after the other. At a certain point in this mode of operation, le moment décisif occurs, the moment when the woman in front of him is no longer conscious of her nakedness. She forgets her nudity and the rigid pose she was directed in and is completely mesmerized by the objective. According to Lieven Herreman, that is the precise moment when body and mind separate. That brief instant of separation is what he has captured in 120 pictures, expressing the duality he so obsessively tried to put on film.

My small life

A sequence of snapshots in which Lieven Herreman focuses on everyday happiness. Ongoing series as long as light will shine.

Lymphoma

Lymphoma consists of a series of diptychs in which Lieven Herreman aims to reconcile both fulfillment of life in the appearance of love and threat to life, in the appearance of cancer. We can observe the protagonist, the photographer himself, dancing back and forth in this implied incompatible duality.

I like the undefinite, the boundless, and constant uncertainty.’
– Gerard Richter

In eenzaamheid.

tentoonspreidt. Alsof er nooit iets te kiezen valt. De naaktheid als
vlekken, spatten in het landschap. Van het lichaam ook. Ze verbergen

niet enkel, onthullen ook. Als heldere demonen in het geraaskal
van een wilde of bekende stad. Woedende dromen. Prikkend
als cactussen in een handpalm. Het dubbele glas van de geliefden
is gebroken.

verdwijnen. O meeslepend en niet verdwijnend heden. O slaaf

Genot
als veruitwendiging van elke bestaansvorm. Een soort vage ontzetting
van de wonde. Nietsvermoedend te midden van de stilstand van

de blik, de camera. Modder en aarde als Purgatorio. De kleren
uitgetrokken. In een elleboog van het moment. Vluchtig en
nonchalant. Haastig ook. Als sporen van wat weids zou kunnen

zijn, in zich dragend. Als einders die de kamer afbakenen. Zonder
franjes, zonder bloemende verbloemingen.

In naakte huizen waar
